Hymenoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hymenoplasty procedure?

A hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure to reconstruct or repair a woman's hymen. The hymen is a piece of tissue covering or surrounding part of your vaginal opening. A hymenoplasty procedure may help address issues such as trauma to the hymen from intercourse or even every day activities.

The hymen may vary in position, shape and size. .Your hymen is an elastic tissue. Once a hymen breaks, it does not grow back.

Who is a candidate for hymen repair?

A candidate for hymenoplasty is typically someone who has experienced a rupture or tear in their hymen. The procedure involves reconstructing the hymen, which is a thin membrane that partially covers the opening of the vagina. Hymenoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia and involves removing the existing hymen and suturing a new hymen in its place. Recovery time is usually short, with most patients returning to their normal activities within a few days.

What are the benefits?

Hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure that can provide both physical and emotional benefits. Physically, it can restore the hymen close to its original state. Emotionally, it can provide a sense of closure for those who have experienced sexual trauma. Additionally, it can provide an improved sense of self-esteem and confidence.

How long does the procedure take?

A hymenoplasty surgery usually takes between one to two hours depending on the amount of repair needed.

What type of anesthesia is used?

A hymen repair is typically performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, so the patient may go home the same day. However if the procedure is being combined with other genital surgeries such as a labia minora reduction or vaginal tightening, general anesthesia may be recommended to ensure the patient is comfortable.

What is the recovery time?

We recommend taking a minimum of three days off work to allow time to rest. During the first 48 to 72 hours, there may be some slight bleeding, bruising or swelling but this should improve over the next few weeks.

Full healing is experienced at approximately six weeks following your procedure.

What can I expect after a hymenoplasty procedure?

During the first few days you may experience temporary bruising and swelling to the area. Patients may be prescribed pain medication to help with post-operative discomfort.

The first post op visit to the office will take place 3-5 days after your hymenoplasty procedure.

Are the results permanent?

A hymenoplasty is not considered a permanent surgery. Hymen repair will last until your hymen is "broken" again. It is important to take proper precautions to prevent the hymen from tearing again, such as avoiding activities that may cause it to tear.

"Dr Kafali made me feel comfortable before and after my procedure. She explained to me Thoroughly what she was going to be doing for the day of the procedure and followed up directly with me after the procedure. I highly recommend Dr Kafali’s her work is amazing and her crew is friendly and receptive."

Is a hymenoplasty covered by insurance?

It is important to check with your insurance provider to determine if they cover hymen repair. Depending on your health insurance benefits, they may cover the cost of the procedure, part of the cost, or none of the cost. FemSculpt does not accept insurance payments or work with insurance companies for hymen repair. If your insurance company is reimbursing you for your procedure, you are responsible for working with your insurance company for reimbursement.
