“I just got my labiaplasty at the end of January so still in the recovery process. The staff there was very kind. They made me feel as comfortable as one could be going into a surgery. It went very well and smooth, have more healing todo but so far already happy about it! Thank you to all the staff that dealt with me while I had mini freak outs lol. You all were really great!”

FemSculpt

A revision labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects and improves a previous labiaplasty surgery. If a labiaplasty procedure is not done correctly, it can be considered a “botched labiaplasty” be due to the surgeon’s lack of experience or use of outdated techniques. This can cause the labia to look worse than before, rather than improving its appearance.

To ensure the best possible outcome, it is important to choose a qualified and experienced labiaplasty surgeon. During the procedure, both the labia majora and labia minora can be addressed, allowing for a more comprehensive and successful revision. With the right surgeon who is familiar with the female anatomy, revision labiaplasty can restore symmetry, relieve any discomfort, providing a more desirable result.

Cosmetic gynecologist and female surgeon Dr. Sue Kafali of FemSculpt Cosmetic Gynecology specializes in revision labiaplasty surgery and genital plastic surgery, helping women from Chicago, Illinois and throughout the country improve their intimate function and confidence back. Revision Labiaplasty Frequently Asked Questions

When is a revision labiaplasty medically necessary?

A revision labiaplasty may be medically necessary if the labia minora are causing physical discomfort or pain due to being too long, too thick, or asymmetrical. The purpose of a reconstructive labiaplasty is to make adjustments to the labia minora to improve the appearance and reduce any discomfort.

During a revision labiaplasty, labiaplasty specialist, Dr. Kafali can reconstruct the vulva so that the anatomy does not cause pain or discomfort. A revision labiaplasty can also be necessary if the patient is unhappy with the results of a previous labiaplasty procedure. In these cases, Dr. Kafali will need to do an evaluation to discuss their concerns. Not everyone is a candidate for a revision labiaplasty.

How do you know you need a revision labiaplasty?

The size and shape of the labia folds differ for every woman, and women seek labiaplasty for many different reasons, including functional and aesthetic concerns. For some women, the skin that makes up their labia minora may be elongated and hang lower than the labia majora. This excess tissue, known as labia minor hypertrophy or “labial show”, may cause hygiene issues, pain during activity and intercourse, or make wearing certain types of clothing such as yoga pants or a bathing uncomfortable or embarrassing.

Benefits of labia surgery may include:

  • Enhanced appearance
  • Relief from discomfort and/or pain during sexual intercourse, wearing tight-fitting clothing, or participating in physical activities
  • Improved sexual function and stimulation
  • Improved hygiene
  • A boost in confidence
Why get a labiaplasty?

How is revision labiaplasty performed?

Labiaplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of your case.

In some cases, the labiaplasty correction surgery may require further resecting of the labia minora. Additionally, Dr. Kafali may remove any scar tissue from the original procedure if it is causing discomfort, is aesthetically displeasing, or is causing pain.

Can a revision labiaplasty restore sexual function?

In some cases, revision labiaplasty can improve sexual function or sensation if the initial procedure resulted in discomfort or pain during sexual activity. However, this is not always the case so it is important to talk to your surgeon about the specific technique used during the procedure.

How long do I need to wait to have revision labiaplasty surgery?

It is recommended you wait at least 6 months or more to allow your tissues to fully heal from the previous labiaplasty procedure. Dr. Kafali may recommend waiting longer depending on your individual situation.

What is the recovery time for a labiaplasty revision procedure?

Recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the revision procedure. In general, we recommend at least a week of downtime or time off work following a labiaplasty procedure. Your total recovery period will last between 6-8 weeks. Our post-operative recovery guide covers what healing generally involves. To ease pain and swelling, the team may recommend that you use an ice pack over the surgical site during the recovery period.

Your doctor may suggest continued activity modifications as your tissue heals, including refraining from the use of tampons and engaging in vaginal intercourse for four to six weeks. While most of the swelling should be gone by week six, it’s not unusual to continue to experience genital swelling for as long as six months following the procedure.

Those that have elected to have revision labiaplasty find significant relief from their discomfort and are very satisfied with the results.
