Find out if you’re a candidate

Vaginal laxity is looseness of the vaginal tissues, inside the canal or at the opening. It is very common, and women of every age experience it.

It can follow trauma from a vaginal delivery, aging, genetics, sexual trauma, or medical conditions that raise pressure on the pelvic floor: asthma, chronic cough, constipation, weight gain, weight loss, pelvic organ prolapse. Regardless of the reason, laxity can contribute to sexual dysfunction and to a real drop in self-esteem.

You may be a candidate if you notice looseness during intercourse, or if you have a history of traumatic vaginal deliveries or other trauma to the vaginal canal. Dr. Kafali evaluates you and tells you what she finds. This is not vanity, and it is not overreacting.

Benefits of vaginal tightening

Five reasons women choose vaginal tightening.

Some for the physical looseness itself, after childbirth or years of strain. Some for how they feel in their own body. Most for both.

1

Tone

The canal and the opening tightened to the degree your anatomy calls for.

2

Comfort

Less of the looseness and pelvic discomfort you have been living around.

3

Intimacy

Many patients report intimacy feels more comfortable, and more present.

4

Confidence

The quiet return of not thinking about it at all.

5

Combines Well

Pairs with labiaplasty, clitoral hood reduction, or labial puff in one visit.

The goal is significant improvement, not perfection. Individual results may vary, and optimal results can take six to twelve months to settle. Talk to Dr. Kafali about what you are experiencing so she can build the right plan for you.

The Surgery

What to Expect on the Day of Your Procedure

Anesthesia

Vaginoplasty is typically done in the operating room under IV or general anesthesia.

Technique

Dr. Kafali examines you internally and externally to determine how much tightening is needed. Internal tightening removes excess tissue from the posterior wall of the canal, which is then sutured to create a narrower space. The opening, or introitus, can be tightened as well. Great care is taken not to over-tighten the tissues.

Preparation

Get plenty of rest beforehand. You will be asked to abstain from intercourse in the days prior, and you may be asked to do a bowel prep so the surgical area stays as clean as possible.

Recovery

What Healing Actually Looks Like

You will know what to expect before you book. Dr. Kafali walks you through recovery in your consultation, then sends you home with it in writing. If she instructs you to use vaginal dilators during recovery, she will show you how.

First 24 hours

Packing and Rest

You go home with vaginal packing that stays in for 24 hours, then comes out the following day. Expect pelvic discomfort, managed with oral pain medication and ice packs.

Days 3 to 5

First Follow-Up

Your first post-op visit with Dr. Kafali. Call the office to book it, or have someone book it for you before your surgery date.

Weeks 1 to 2

Back to Work

Many patients return to work with limited restrictions in this window. Do not lift more than 5 to 10 pounds, and do not drive while you are still taking pain medication. Bruising usually resolves within one to three weeks.

Weeks 6 to 8

Intimacy and Tampons

Nothing goes into the vagina, tampons included, for six to eight weeks. Dr. Kafali confirms when it is safe to resume sexual activity at your post-operative visit, based on the extent of your surgery and how you are healing.

Every body heals at its own pace. Individual recovery varies and individual results may vary.

Vaginal Tightening

Frequently Asked Questions

What is vaginal tightening and vaginoplasty?

Vaginal tightening is a surgical procedure designed to tighten the vaginal opening and/or the vaginal canal, which can become loose or widened due to childbirth, repeated trauma, straining, or aging. The procedure can tighten the opening of the vagina, or introitus, as well as the vaginal canal itself, up to the level of the cervix.

Am I a candidate for vaginal tightening?

If you feel laxity of the vaginal area during intercourse, you may be a candidate for vaginal tightening. Women who have a history of traumatic vaginal deliveries or other traumas to the vaginal canal should be evaluated for vaginal laxity if they suspect it as a cause for sexual dysfunction or discomfort.

Are there ways to tighten the vagina without surgery?

Yes, there are some non-surgical options that can help improve or tighten the vagina including Kegel exercises or certain laser therapies. These treatments are ideal for patients with mild to moderate laxity. Kegel exercises will help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Intense contractions from vaginal orgasms can also help strengthen the pelvic floor.

How is vaginal tightening surgery performed?

Vaginoplasty is typically done in the operating room under IV or general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon will perform an internal and external examination to determine the amount of tightening needed. If internal tightening is required, this is usually done by removing the excess tissue from the posterior wall of the vaginal canal. The canal is then sutured together to create a more narrow space. The external opening can be tightened as well by removing some tissue from the posterior opening of the vagina or introitus. Great care must be taken to not overly tighten the tissues, which may result in difficulty and pain with intercourse.

What are scars like for vaginal tightening?

Internal vaginal tightening will leave no visible scars. The mucosal tissue lining the internal vaginal canal is rich in blood supply and the tissues usually heal very well with almost no scarring. The external vaginal tissues also heal very well, and as long as post-operative instructions are followed, the scars should be barely noticeable over time.

How do I prepare for vaginal tightening surgery?

You should get plenty of rest before your vaginal tightening surgery. You will be asked to abstain from sexual intercourse in the days prior to your surgery. You may also be asked to do a bowel prep, which will empty your colon of stool to keep the surgery area as clean as possible during the procedure.

Your doctor will provide you with post-operative instructions.

When can I have sex again?

Patients undergoing vaginal tightening surgery should wait to have sexual intercourse and vaginal penetration for a minimum of 6 weeks. Dr. Kafali will advise when it is safe at your final post-op appointment. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to minimize complications and allow your body to heal. Dr. Sue Kafali will determine when you can resume sexual activity based on the extent of surgery and the progress of your healing during your post-operative visit.

What are the risks of vaginal tightening surgery?

As with any surgery, the typical risks are: risks from anesthesia, bleeding, infection, and injury to nerves and adjacent tissues. Specific to vaginal tightening is injury to the urethral opening which may cause difficulty in urination, injury to the anal canal resulting in incontinence, injury to the rectum requiring repair. Also if the vaginoplasty is made too tight or the tissues heal improperly, vaginal strictures or over-tightening of the opening could occur, requiring surgical dilation or correction. Please note that these serious complications are exceedingly rare, especially when vaginal tightening is done by an experienced surgeon.

How much does vaginal tightening surgery cost?

Mini-Vaginal Tightening™ at FemSculpt is $7,900 to $12,000*. Vaginoplasty, or full vaginal tightening, is $9,900 to $16,000*. Where you land in that range depends on the extent of the tightening required, the anesthesia, the facility where the procedure is done, and whether other procedures such as labiaplasty or clitoral hood reduction are done at the same time.

*All pricing is an estimate and may change at any time without notice. Operating room and anesthesia fees are billed separately and are included in your overall quote.
