Hemorrhoid Removal Surgery | Chicago, Illinois
A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoid removal is a surgical procedure that excises swollen, painful, or prolapsed hemorrhoidal tissue from around the anus. You may hear it called a hemorrhoidectomy. The goal is to eliminate chronic symptoms that non-surgical treatments have not resolved, including pain, bleeding, hygiene challenges, or tissue that protrudes and will not stay inside.
Our patients often opt to include a hemorrhoidectomy alongside their vaginoplasty and labiaplasty procedures, either as an add-on or as a standalone operation.
Hemorrhoids Frequently Asked Questions
What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum.
Hemorrhoids tend to affect women more than men, often exacerbated by pregnancy, which increases the likelihood of developing them. Genetic predisposition plays a significant role, alongside factors such as constipation, asthma, and obesity. Activities like weight-bearing exercise and fluctuations in weight can also contribute. Additionally, a genetic component involving collagen structure weakness in blood vessel walls can lead to bulging vessels and the formation of hemorrhoids in the rectal canal.
Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the lower rectum, which can lead to the swelling of the veins in that area. Several factors can contribute to this increased pressure, including:
- Straining during bowel movements: This is often due to constipation, a common cause of hemorrhoids.
- Prolonged sitting: Sitting for long periods, especially on the toilet, can increase pressure on the veins in the anus and rectum.
- Heavy lifting: Regularly lifting heavy objects can also strain the veins in the rectum.
- Pregnancy: The weight of the baby places pressure on the abdomen, leading to increased pressure in the veins of the lower rectum. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also weaken the veins.
- Obesity: Excess body weight can significantly increase pressure on the abdominal and rectal veins.
- Diet: A diet low in fiber can lead to constipation, which can exacerbate the condition.
- Aging: As one ages, the tissue around the veins in the rectum and anus can weaken and stretch, increasing the risk of hemorrhoids.
Preventing and managing these factors can help reduce the risk of developing hemorrhoids or experiencing exacerbations of existing hemorrhoids.
How Are hemorrhoids treated?
Treatment options vary depending on your inidividual case. External hemorrhoids can be removed, but internal ones require evaluation by colorectal surgeons. If hemorrhoids are asymptomatic and not causing bleeding, surgical intervention may not be necessary. However, if your external hemorrhoids are hurting intimacy or confidence, removal can be considered.
This procedure can be done as a stand alone procedure, however it is often done in combination with other vaginal rejuvenation procedures including:
