Vaginal tightening, also referred to as vaginoplasty, is a feminine rejuvenation procedure with the goal of improving pelvic tone to increase and tighten a woman’s vaginal opening and/or vaginal canal. Women may develop looseness following childbirth, aging, weight loss, genetics, and certain medical conditions.

How do you know if you need vaginal tightening?

Women may develop looseness or loss of pelvic tone following childbirth, aging, weight loss, genetics, and certain medical conditions such asthma constipation, or other trauma to the vagina. Women may notice a loose feeling or decreased friction in their vagina due to the weakening of the muscles in the interior vaginal walls. This could lead to decreased sexual satisfaction, function, or even decreased self-esteem. The degree of vaginal laxity will determine the recommended treatment; laser therapy, mini-vaginal tightening, or full vaginoplasty procedure.

Premenopausal or perimenopausal women who are experiencing these changes may be a candidate for the surgery. If the patient is post-menopausal, I may also recommend hormone therapy with estrogen to help build up the vaginal mucosa thickness.

Are there non-surgical options for vaginal tightening?

Yes. Depending on the amount of vaginal laxity present, energy-based treatments such as the MonaLisa Touch may improve vaginal laxity. Energy-based treatments promote the production of collagen and elasticity. PRP injections may also augment laser therapy and further help with collagen production. Something that can be done easily at home is to regularly do kegel and pelvic floor exercises to help improve vaginal laxity by strengthening the muscles in and around the vagina. When these non-surgical therapies do not help, vaginoplasty surgery may be an option.

Is there a risk to having vaginal tightening surgery?

There is some risk, however, the risk is very low. Your surgeon should be experienced with female anatomy and cosmetic gynecology. Your surgeon will provide post-operative instructions to minimize infection or complications.

Should I wait until after having babies to have vaginal tightening procedure done?

Generally it is recommended you wait until you’re done having children before choosing to have vaginal tightening surgery. Since childbirth stretches the vaginal canal, women may cause the vaginal muscles and tissues to re-loosen and may require a second vaginoplasty.

When is it safe to have sex again after a vaginal tightening procedure?

Patients should wait to have sexual intercourse or insert anything into the vagina for at least for 6 weeks after surgery. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to minimize complications and allow your body to heal.

How does vaginal tightening help improve your sex life?

Women who undergo this procedure should experience an increased sensation around the vaginal opening, increased sexual satisfaction for both partners and ultimately increased confidence.
